SUMMARY:Adaptation of Stories and Stories of Adaptation: Media\, Modes and Codes
DESCRIPTION:UNIVERSITY OF TRENTO (ITALY)\nITALIAN ASSOCIATION OF CANADIAN STUDIES \nDecember 5-6 2018 \nAdaptation of Stories and Stories of Adaptation:\nMedia\, Modes and Codes \n  \nAISC2018programma\n  \n  \nOnline registration open at the following link: https://webapps.unitn.it/form/it/Web/Home/convegni\nWe kindly ask you to pay the conference fee of 70 euros by 15 November 2018 (12:00) \nCritical attention to adaptations has traditionally privileged film transcodifications of literary works.\nHowever\, the latter have been generally dismissed through the filter of a “morally loaded rhetoric\nof fidelity and infidelity” (Hutcheon [2006] 2013\, 31). Limited in extent and epistemic potential\,\nthis approach needs to be overcome through the adoption of a more inclusive\, open and fluid view\,\nconcerned with the circular process of story(re)telling inherent in adaptation(s)\, and encompassing\nendless interpretation\, appropriation and creation.\nIn this vein\, the Italian Association of Canadian Studies is pleased to announce its interdisciplinary conference\non Adaptation of Stories and Stories of Adaptation: Media\, Modes and Codes.\nScholars in Canadian studies from a range of disciplines\, such as\, literature\, linguistics\, history\,\ngeography\, architecture\, will be invited to critically share and discuss the fluid\, complex adaptation\nof stories\, across media\, modes and codes\, as well as across genres\, cultures and ages.\nAgainst this backdrop\, Canada might differently express the context of origin\, interpretation and circulation of stories.\nParticipants may address several genres (radio\, TV\, film adaptations\, stage plays\, opera\, ballets\, videogames\,\nart and architectural monuments\, nature-park rides\, among others)\, as carrying intertextual relations with other texts\,\nand as differently engaging audiences. \nThey may also explore multifold and multifaceted stories of adaptation\, in their historical\, socio-cultural\, economic and legal dynamics.\nWe invite original contributions in this field of inquiry\, in the form of theoretical speculations\,\nmethodological discussions\, case-study illustrations within several areas of interest\, including but\nnot limited to: \n• adaptation as story(re)telling\n• forms of engagement and adaptation\n• TV\, film and theatre adaptations\n• new media adaptations\n• experiences of/as adaptation\n• adaptation and (intra/inter-linguistic) translation\n• stories of adaptation in Canada: legal issues\n• diachronic perspectives over adaptation\n• Canadian identity\, culture\, and society and adaptation(s)\n• Canadian geography and history and adaptation(s) \nKeynote speeker: Prof. Emerita Linda Hutcheon (University of Toronto). \nParticipants should be AISC members. Conference fee: 70 €.\nA selection of papers will be peer-reviewed for publication. \nScientific Committee:\nSabrina Francesconi (University of Trento)\nGerardo Acerenza (University of Trento)\nOriana Palusci (University of Naples\, L’Orientale)\nLuigi Bruti Liberati (University of Milano)\nAngela Buono (University of Naples\, L’Orientale)\nAlessandra Ferraro (University of Udine)\nElena Lamberti (University of Bologna)\nAnna Mongibello (University of Naples\, L’Orientale)\nBiancamaria Rizzardi (University of Pisa)\nVenue: Palazzo Prodi\, Department of Humanities\, University of Trento\, via Tommaso Gar\, 14 – Trento\nConference languages: English\, French and Italian\nFurther information will be posted on the website:\nhttps://webmagazine.unitn.it/evento/lettere/41898/aisc-2018 \n  \nOnline registration open at the following link: https://webapps.unitn.it/form/it/Web/Home/convegni \nWe kindly ask you to pay the conference fee of 70 euros by 15 November 2018 (12:00) \n  \nDownload the Call

SUMMARY:[Pisa] Conferenza: Species trouble and gender trouble: Two case studies in the uncanny
DESCRIPTION:Lunedì 3 Dicembre 2018 – Ore 15.00 \nSala Colonne di Palazzo Venera\n(Via Santa Maria 36) \nProf. Héliane Catherine Daziron-Ventura\n(Université Toulouse) \nConferenza \nSpecies trouble and gender trouble:\nTwo case studies in the uncanny \n  \nStarting from Jentsch’s definiton of the uncanny in 1906\, I will move on to Freud’s in 1918 and finally to Lacan’s more recent ones to envisage the fundamental self-alienation of the ego\, the foreigness that lies within us\, and which is represented in literature through animal metaphors or instances of discontinuous identities. \nI will use the concept of inappropriate/d other that Donna Harraway borrowed from Vietnamese-American film maker and feminist Trinh Minh Ha (1992) to propose an interpretation of two stories by Alice Munro\, “Bardon Bus” (1982) and “The Albanian Virgin” (1994). The former addresses the portrait of man as dog and the latter creates a fictive genealogy of true historical figures ranging from Saint Claire of Assisi to Claire Claimont in Victorian times for her own fictive and “enlightened” Canadian character. \nI will lay the emphasis on what Harraway calls “deconstructive relationality” which makes “potent connection that exceeds domination”. The one who is inappropriate does not occupy a fixed position\, he is not reflecting the sacred image of the same; there is “something inappropriate\, unfitting and so maybe inappropriated” in the positioning that he adopts. I will also use two of Judith Butler’s essays\, “Gender Trouble” (2005) and “Giving an Account of Oneself” (2006) to consider the development of pluristable identities across time and space and the construction of character as an incremental process with potent intertextual and intercultural ramifications.
