SUMMARY:[Pisa] Conferenza: Species trouble and gender trouble: Two case studies in the uncanny
DESCRIPTION:Lunedì 3 Dicembre 2018 – Ore 15.00 \nSala Colonne di Palazzo Venera\n(Via Santa Maria 36) \nProf. Héliane Catherine Daziron-Ventura\n(Université Toulouse) \nConferenza \nSpecies trouble and gender trouble:\nTwo case studies in the uncanny \n  \nStarting from Jentsch’s definiton of the uncanny in 1906\, I will move on to Freud’s in 1918 and finally to Lacan’s more recent ones to envisage the fundamental self-alienation of the ego\, the foreigness that lies within us\, and which is represented in literature through animal metaphors or instances of discontinuous identities. \nI will use the concept of inappropriate/d other that Donna Harraway borrowed from Vietnamese-American film maker and feminist Trinh Minh Ha (1992) to propose an interpretation of two stories by Alice Munro\, “Bardon Bus” (1982) and “The Albanian Virgin” (1994). The former addresses the portrait of man as dog and the latter creates a fictive genealogy of true historical figures ranging from Saint Claire of Assisi to Claire Claimont in Victorian times for her own fictive and “enlightened” Canadian character. \nI will lay the emphasis on what Harraway calls “deconstructive relationality” which makes “potent connection that exceeds domination”. The one who is inappropriate does not occupy a fixed position\, he is not reflecting the sacred image of the same; there is “something inappropriate\, unfitting and so maybe inappropriated” in the positioning that he adopts. I will also use two of Judith Butler’s essays\, “Gender Trouble” (2005) and “Giving an Account of Oneself” (2006) to consider the development of pluristable identities across time and space and the construction of character as an incremental process with potent intertextual and intercultural ramifications.

SUMMARY:Call for proposals - Beyond Munro and Atwood: Other Voices in Canadian Women’s Writing
DESCRIPTION:We gladly share a call for proposal from MacEwan University\,  Edmonton (Alberta)\, Canada. \nDeadline: July 15\, 2018 \nDownload the Call for proposals \nWith the recent critical and commercial success of the TV adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale\,\nand the newly released adaptation of Alias Grace\, myriad audiences are (re)discovering\nCanadian Margaret Atwood. This rediscovery follows on the heels of Alice Munro’s 2013 Nobel\nprize for literature\, and suggests that conditions are favourable for reinvigorating an interest in\nCanadian women’s writing that goes beyond the established\, now-canonical writers like Atwood\nand Munro. Canadian women’s writing is indeed a flourishing field and the impressive number of\nwomen writing in Canada at the present time and the diversity of their backgrounds reflect the\nmulticultural mosaic that makes up the country today and underscores the need for these other\nwomen’s voices to be heard and explored (McPherson xviii). \nThe collective volume we are proposing is intended to be a critical examination of contemporary\nCanadian women’s writing and will therefore fill a gap in Canadian literature studies by giving\nspace to scholarly analysis on both established and emerging authors as well as unknown\nand/or overlooked voices. Our aim is to explore the richness of women’s writing in Canada\, and\ncontribute to the establishment of a deeper research field in Canadian women’s writing by\nbuilding on work already begun in Shirley Neuman and Smaro Kamboureli’s A Mazing Space:\nWriting Canadian Women Writing (1987)\, Barbara Godard’s Gynocritics/Gynocritiques (1988)\,\nCoral Ann Howells’ Contemporary Canadian Women’s Fiction (2003)\, Karen S. McPherson’s\nArcheologies of an Uncertain Future. Recent Generations of Canadian Women Writing (2006)\nas well as work currently being done at the University of Alberta’s Canadian Literary Centre /\nCentre de Littérature Canadienne which has produced Marie Carrière and Patricia Demers’\nedited volume entitled Regenerations: Canadian Women’s Writing / Régénérations: Écriture des\nfemmes au Canada (2014)\, and more recently\, Ten Canadian Writers in Context (2016) – seven\nof whom are women – edited by Marie Carrière\, Curtis Gillespie and Jason Purcell. \nThe focus of this collection is broad and aims to include not only the “traditional” Anglophone\nand Francophone authors of European origin\, but to also shine a light on minority writers\nincluding\, but not limited to\, Indigenous and Métis\, writers of colour\, migrant as well as LGBTQ2\nauthors. Some writers to consider are Nelly Arcan\, Lee Maracle\, Judy Fong Bates\, Dionne\nBrand\, Bev Sellars\, Esi Edugyan\, Elise Turcotte\, Carmen Aguirre\, Cherie Demaline\, Nancy\nHuston\, Amy MacKay\, Kim Thúy\, Farzana Doctor\, Miriam Toews\, Ishara Deen\, Eden Robinson\,\nErika de Vasconcelos\, Ying Chen\, Zoe Whittall\, Madeleine Thien\, Joy Kogawa\, Carmen\nRodriguez\, among many others. \nPossible topics include\, though are by no means limited to the following suggestions:\n– Women and politics\n– Women and society\n– Indigenous and Métis voices\n– Refugee and migrant female voices\n– Women and violence\n– Motherhood\n– Womanhood\n– Feminisms\n– Intersectional marginalization\n– LGBTQ2 communities\n– Conflict with authority (church\, family\, culture\, more\, government)\n– Multiculturalism and hybridity: ethnic\, linguistic\, religious\, gender\, identity\n– Language and the self\n– Experiences of new Canadians\n– Testimony\n– Exile\nPlease submit a 300-word abstract (including title\, institutional affiliation\, and brief biography –\nmaximum 100 words) by July 15\, 2018. We welcome abstracts in English\, French\, Spanish\,\nRussian\, and Portuguese\, but final contributions will be in English. Acceptance of abstracts will\nbe communicated by August 31\, 2018.
